We should call them “friendly” competitions!
We welcome play in as many of our competitions as you qualify and have time for throughout the season. Competitions here at Royal Ashdown are friendly affairs, but that’s not to say there’s not spirited competition taking place.
The Winkley Smith Challenge Cup
A 36 hole scratch medal competition played from the white tees on the Old Course. The contest has been played since May 1936 when the great South African golfer, Bobby Locke, won the inaugural trophy having shot 18 fours over his morning round of 72. The trophy was donated by the eccentrically named Septimus Winkley Smith, a local resident and former Royal Ashdown Forest member.
Le Fleming Open Mixed Foursomes
The Club’s annual open mixed foursomes event held each August for the Roger Le Fleming salvers, donated in 1963 in memory of the former Club Captain and Indian army officer.
